INTERVIEW WITH AN ESCORT IN EUSKADI

Playing a recently published interview.

- How is the daily life of an escort in the Basque Country?
If I said that this is a job like any other would be lying. Maybe one partner but I think it would not agree. Anyway, you end up getting into a routine that looks like any other job, that is, we, we could say the same point but from different premises. Go through one by one the parked cars, trying to figure out the intentions of the passers-memorize their faces; review paper, containers or bags which may conceal an explosive, deciding the route, check that their escape routes are free. Broadly speaking, that's our job.

- What relationship is between an escort and protected?
You have to think on a normal day we get to be fourteen or fifteen hours with our protection. It creates a very strong trust relationship between them.

- Is it good pay?
Probably not. We are at about 2,500 € per month. Leaving aside that we are risking their lives, again, many hours a day, so nothing will be escorted millionaire. But hey, everyone wants a raise, right? (Laughs).

- Can be escorted without communion with any particular political ideology or having certain moral values?
Perfectly. Terrorism is not about political ideas but on the lives of people.

- The escorts are targets of ETA do you feel scared?
As we say in the trade, is a complement to the payroll. I'm not saying you have to be brave to be an escort but as what is said of the sea, do not be afraid, but great respect. Every day when I wake up, I think "today may be the day when we suffer an attack." Respect to this idea makes you alert, and well, it is our job, to live in a continual state of "red alert." If we were to think not so, would lower our attention and our guard, and talking about life itself, that would be very dangerous for the protected and for ourselves. I guess, in a way, this "red alert" enables us to face the fear. Surely my family to see me come home every day, breathe more easily.

- Is there freedom in Euskadi?
Basques always say this is a great place to live and is completely true. Also, since Madrid and the rest of Spain exaggerate things that happen here. You hear people say if you mess with them, they do not bother you. It is partly true. But all know that in Euskadi Basque word "freedom" is limited only in Cadiz, Teruel and Santander, for example. Not have to be escorted to realize this. The Basques can not express our ideas freely, our freedom is curtailed by the guns of ETA. Interestingly, those who support the terrorists have more freedom than their opponents. Fortunately, the indifference of the Basques is narrowing.

- If an ETA is coming and is preparing to shoot, what comes to your head in those moments?
Despite the training we have, I do not think that is a rational moment. I myself do not know what would happen. We have to follow several guidelines, protect and evacuate the escort, etc. But we are talking about fractions of a second, I mean, if someone comes with a gun in his hand, I would stop to think if you have family, its name or anything else you know?. It would be him or me. It is sad to think that. I would never use my gun out of service.

- What do you think the recent reaction Lazkao citizen who attacked a HerrikoTaberna?
reaction is completely understandable. It is normal we sympathize somewhat with this man and what he did. But without doubt, much less that is the solution, we can not measure up to them. I do not believe in eye for an eye. We have to fight with every weapon that gives us the rule of law and the State Security Corps, I think we can win convincing. In the twenty-first century, it is unreasonable for anyone to kill another person for their political beliefs, religious or whatever.

- What is the future of Euskadi?
There is only one future for Euskadi and is a peaceful society. A no ETA Basque Country. I see no end. We can not have other political views as one of the fundamental rights of man as freedom is not met. Ideas do not fit in a democracy if there are bombs in the middle. Only in a peaceful society can discuss other issues.

- life is beautiful to someone else?
I give it every day for my wife and my children. So, imagine how nice it can be that.

Many thanks. Our appreciation for the great work of these men in the service of freedom and democracy.
